To promote Christianity among these people, the first bishop of that see sent missionaries to St. Matthews in 1827-28 under the direction of Father James Kelly and Brother Michael Moynihan. This small community had humble beginnings with only two houses on Main Street when it began to grow rapidly after construction began on what would become its present day downtown core in 1902-03 by local businessmen John Witherspoon and Hiram Hodge Jr.. Witherspoon later donated land for a new high school and church complex; while Hodge built a brewery on Main Street which remains today one of town's most popular attractions for tourists. Today, St. Matthews enjoys growing popularity as an active cultural center where music, art and literature are enjoyed by residents and visitors alike – many who call it their "second home." The town has also been designated as a heritage site by the National Register of Historic Places since 2003. The city experienced a period of decline after World War II, but has since recovered as a cultural and commercial center.
