The town of St. Matthews, Kentucky was founded in 1785 by the Rev. John Wilkinson. The settlement was located on the banks of the Monongahela River, about two miles east of the present city of Louisville. The name “Matthews” is derived from the name of one of the founder’s sons, who was also called John. At first, only men were allowed to settle in this area and there were no schools or churches until 1814 when a chapel was built by Rev. James Aiken and dedicated to Our Lady of Mount Carmel. From then on, St. Matthews became an important religious center for eastern Kentucky and throughout much of central Pennsylvania as well. St. Matthews quickly became a major economic center due to its location near transportation hubs such as Louisville and Pittsburgh and its ability to ship goods directly into those cities without having to go through larger towns or ports. In 1824, it became the capital of what would become known as Eastern Kentucky Territory and continued to be so until 1861 when Cumberland County was created within that territory. During that time, St. Matthews experienced some significant growth including the addition of several large hotels which remain today among its most popular tourist attractions (e.g., The White House Hotel). In 1947, following passage of legislation creating Jefferson County within Eastern Kentucky Territory, St.-Matthews saw yet another significant growth spurt with new businesses being established along both downtown streets as well as in more residential areas around town square (such as immediate north-west corner where now stands First Baptist Church). This period also saw construction underway on what would eventually become State Capitol building (later renamed after President Harry S Truman), which inaugurated a new era for St.-Matthews which continues to this day (and has since been home to numerous other businesses). Today, St.-Matthews remains an important cultural & commercial center for eastern Kentucky with many popular tourist destinations such as its downtown square filled with historical landmarks dating back centuries; modern shopping malls dottinglying nearly every neighborhood; professional sports teams playing at various venues throughouttown; multiple educational institutions nearby including two state universities – one located just outside town limits while another is located just east across Interstate 65; etc.; making it an attractive place indeed for visitors seeking information about local history & culture or simply spending some time relaxationful inside its wide open streetside neighborhoods complete withfriendly people!
In 1785, the first Baptist church in what is now St. Matthews was organized. The Rev. David McConnell officiated at that first service. In 1814, the Baptist Church of St. Matthews was built and dedicated by Bishop John Wesley. It served as the main Baptist church in the area until it burned down in 1871. The present day First Baptist church was organized on December 6, 1892 and has been serving the community since then.
