By the 1930s, holster production had shifted to Springfield Armory, which became the leading manufacturer of holsters for handguns in the United States. In the 1940s and 1950s, firearms regulations began to change, which led to a decline in handgun sales in St. Matthews; however, this trend reversed during the 1960s and 1970s when gun regulation became stricter across America. As a result of these changes, revolver sales increased in St. Matthews between 1985 and 1990 while handgun sales decreased between 1985 and 2000; however, this reversal has since reversed again as revolver sales have resumed their prior levels while handguns have remained at low levels throughout most of 2011-2015.
The Evangelical Lutheran Church in America (ELCA) was founded in 1881 by Reverend Dr. Carl Ludwig Müller and other pastors from Kentucky’s capital city of Louisville. The church grew rapidly, and soon had a constituency in much of the eastern United States. In 1902 the ELCA purchased land east of Lexington for a new cathedral and church complex, which became St. Matthews Cathedral. In 1960, the ELCA merged with the Protestant Episcopal Church to form the United Methodist Church (UMC). At this point St. Matthews Cathedral became known as “the UMCC Cathedral” because it is jointly administered by both churches. The cathedral has been enlarged multiple times, most recently in 2006 when it received a new roof and renovation project costing $24 million dollars. Today, St. Matthews Cathedral continues its welcoming message of inclusion and opportunity to all who visit or live within its boundaries – whether they are worshipers or simply curious onlookers!

The population of St. Matthews decreased during the 19th century because of various factors such as loss of trade opportunities due to competition from larger cities such as Louisville, Kentucky; increasing transportation costs associated with railroads; and increased Dust Bowl migration to other areas in the Midwest due to poor crop yields in those states during that time period
In 1796, the town of St. Matthews was founded by General James Wilkinson and his wife, Nancy. The first post office was established in 1800, and the first store was built in 1802. In 1807, St. Matthews became a county seat. In 1827, the first courthouse was built. The town developed into a small agricultural community with homes and businesses located near the river.
