In 1883, John Witherspoon founded the first rifle range in Kentucky when he opened his facility on Fourth Street in St. Matthews. This range became one of the most popular shooting destinations in the area and supplied firearms for many years thereafter. In 1916, Ladd & Company began manufacturing pistols out of steel at their plant on Second Street in downtown St. Matthews; this company continued operations until 1934 when it merged into Browning Firearms Corporation; both companies remain active as today’s subsidiaries of Browning Arms Group Incorporated (BAG). handguns manufactured by Ladd & Company are still sales favorites among collectors today! One such feature is the Mansion Hill Cemetery which is located adjacent to downtown St. Matthews and contains some of the most well-known graves in all of Kentucky including those of President George Washington and General Andrew Jackson both of whom lived and died here during their careers as public figures within our statehood process - something that cannot be found anywhere else withinKentucky! Other significant historical landmarks located withinSt Maher's boundaries include: The Old State Capitol Building (now used as apartments),the McCracken County Courthouse (now used as offices),the Westminster Presbyterian Synagogue (established 1793),and many other locales not listed herein but which are still deeply rooted in county history and culture!
St. Matthews was founded by Methodists in 1796. The city is named for John St. Matthews, the founder of the Methodist church there. In 1829, it became a U.S. town and was incorporated as a city in 1859.
