In 1814, when Kentucky became an American state, St. Matthews became one of its twelve original counties within the new state boundaries - one of only a few communities in western Kentucky to be chartered during this period (the others being Paducah). In 1830, when Saint Matthews became a U .S . Census Place , it was given its present name – St .Matthews Parish – by Bishop John Epps III based on his visits there while he served as pastor at White-House Chapel near Cincinnati., Ohio (). After Saint Matthew’s parish relocated from Cincinnati to Louisville in 1892 following church construction projects throughout Louisville County (), most residents continued residing inSt .Matthews until their displacement by growth along Main Street starting about 1950 ().

Pope Francis dedicated the new St. Matthews Catholic Church in Louisville, Kentucky in May of 2017. Many people in and around the city remember the events that took place there in 1916 when a group of men led by Father James McDonald gathered to form what would become St. Matthews Parish. The church was built on land that had been donated by William Cavanaugh, who also served as the first bishop of Louisville. The parish grew rapidly and soon there were enough people living in the area to warrant their own building. In 1924,Father McDonald left for another parish and construction began on the present facilities which opened its doors to worshippers on Christmas Day, 1925. At this time, the population of Louisville was over 100,000 and growth was continuing at a rapid pace. In 1951, Father John Jaffa became our pastor after serving as an assistant priest at Our Lady of Mount Carmel Chapel in downtown Louisville for three years. He brought about significant changes within our parish including renovating all of our churches- one hundred percent! He also initiated many social programs which continue to this day such as food pantries and soup kitchens. In 1976 Father Jaffa retired from ministry but continued to serve through his successor- Father Leo Speranzo- until his death in 1984. During his time as pastor we experienced some very difficult times; however, he always managed to keep things light with humor and good will towards everyone he encountered no matter how challenging things might be! We are grateful for all that Father Jaffa has done for us over these past fifty years! "Thank you Lord Jesus Christ for your love," said Fr Leo upon receiving Holy Communion during Mass at our church last year."

St. Matthews was founded in 1792 by the Fathers of the Catholic Church as a mission station. The town reached its peak in population during the early 1800s, when it had over 10,000 residents.
