By 1870 it had become a rural community with 792 residents, most of whom were farmers or labourers working on ranches and farms around the area that includes today's downtown area and portions of the riverfront. A cotton gin was built here in 1876 and became one of St. Matthews' many landmark attractions. In 1907, textile manufacturer William H Macy made his first investment in this town when he purchased land adjacent to what is now downtown for a cotton gin and other industrial uses which would eventually lead to Macy's department store being built here in 1912-1915 (now known as First National Bank). In 1944, during World War II, St. Matthews joined forces with neighboring Covington to form becomes one of only two communities within KY designated as " zone B" (controlled by military) for war production purposes - providing housing for workers engaged in munitions manufacturing and related activities; transportation; food processing; allied airfields; armament works etc.; while also becoming headquarters for military intelligence among other things stemming from Mayor Toney's efforts to integrate all parts of society into one cohesive unit during wartime times In recent years downtown business district has experienced declines due primarily to lack of tourism dollars that come through various businesses located there such as restaurants and nightlife venues but redevelopment is ongoing with plans including office buildings/infrastructure/residential developments along riverfront
