The use of firearms and other protective devices has been a part of the St. Matthews community for many years. Some of the earliest guns in the community were purchased by farmers in 1820 and others were obtained from friends or family members. In 1865, George Washingtonlicensed the first gun store in Kentucky, located in Lexington. At that time, handguns were not considered as weapons and only rifles could be bought at this store. Ammunition was also not available at that time. Gun pouches have been a part of the community since before there were any stores to sell them. The first ones made out of cloth or leather originated from Europe and they were only used for carrying pistols and ammunition around town. over time, different materials were used for gun pouches including fabric, felt, canvas, plastic, metal mesh and even up until today some Gundams are stored with their weapons inside a PVC bag!

The first gun pouches were made in 1857 by a man named George Stephenson. He designed and built the first locomotive, the Liverpool and Manchester Railway. The pouches were used to store rifles and pistols on the trains.
On July 6, 1795, the first St. Matthews mission was organized by Rev. John Capps and Brothers with the goal of providing evangelism opportunities to Native Americans living in what is now Kentucky. The small church quickly became known for its missionary work and soon had a large congregation of natives who were drawn to the faith by its teachings about Jesus Christ. The church grew rapidly and within 10 years it had erected a wooden church tower that still stands today. In 1815, St. Matthews established a school which soon became one of the leading schools in Kentucky; it taught children from Kindergarten through college levels. In 1820, Rev. James White organized another mission at nearby Lyndonburg and began preaching there as well; this mission would become known as White Chapel or True Chapel because of its affiliation with White Chapel Methodist Episcopal Church in Manchester, Tennessee (now Lexington). Because of their many successes in missionary work, the missionaries were given titles such as " Founders" or "Heroes". In 1827, James White was honored with an award from the Baptist Convention for his tireless efforts in spreading Christianity throughout Kentucky and beyond. As tensions between Protestants and Catholics mounted throughout America during the 1830s and 1840s, St. Matthews experienced increased persecution from both groups; however, due to its strong teaching on salvation through grace alone, the church continued to grow even under difficult circumstances. Despite these challenges, however, St. Matthews’ missionaries always remained steadfast in their belief that Jesus is Lord and they preached repentance and faith in Him despite persecution. Stated one missionary: "We do not fear God's judgments but we are confident that He will pardon us." Although times have been tough since then - including several devastating wildfires - St Matthews has seen great revival activity over recent years thanks to its hearty witness of Jesus Christ!

In 1453, Portuguese Prince João II ordered his troops to carry swords instead of spears because he believed that swords were more efficient at attacking enemies than spears. Gun powder became available in Europe during this time so firearms were developed specifically for war purposes. In 1664, Dutch explorer Abel Tasman discovered New Zealand while sailing through the southern hemisphere on his way back to Holland after exploring Australia and Tasmania. When he arrived in New Zealand, he took possession of several land grants including one called Te Anau which led him to develop what would become known as Auckland City (present day Auckland). During his visit, Tasman also acquired somegunpowder weapons which he used against Polynesian natives living on Rangitoto Island during his expedition in 1665-66

In 1795, the land that is now St. Matthews was part of what was known as the Great Miami River Valley. The area was home to a variety of cultures and languages before Europeans arrived in search of new lands to settle. In December 1795, James Caldwell, a Revolutionary War veteran and signer of the United States Constitution, laid out a plan for what would become Kentucky. He named the area after his friend, Saint Matthews, who had been martyred during the Protestant Reformation. Beginning in 1800, construction began on what would become St. Matthews Church. The church was completed in 1802 and served as the parish center for eastern Kentucky until it closed its doors in 1912. Today only traces remain of the church’s original walls and foundations; however, from its appearance at first glance it appears to have been quite impressive. The town that developed around St. Matthews soon became an important agricultural center due to its location on telegraph lines connecting Nashville with Louisville and other parts of Kentucky and Tennessee. The town declined after World War II because of changes in technology and population growth elsewhere in Eastern Kentucky; however, it has since redeveloped into a popular tourist destination boasting many unique attractions including antique shops, restaurants, galleries and hotels
The original settlement of St. Matthews was founded in 1786 by Hugh McDowell and his family. The town was named for the biblical figure Saint Matthews, who was martyred in Jerusalem. The first store and post office were built in the town. By 1811, the population of St. Matthews hadgrown to over 100 people. In 1815, the first school was established in St. Matthews and operated until it closed in 1902. In 1861, a railroad station was built inSt. Matthews and served as a primary transportation hub for the community until it closed in 1984.
