St. Matthews is a small town located in Clarke County, Kentucky, United States. The population was 1,711 at the 2010 census. The name of the town is derived from Saint Matthews Parish in Manchester, England. The first settlers to St. Matthews were French Canadians who arrived in 1774. They erected a log cabin on the banks of the River Monongahela and named it La Cote d'Or (the Orchard). In 1812, Englishmen arrived and built a log cabin on what is now Main Street. They called it White Sulphur Springs because of the sulfurous smell that came from their well-tilled land near present day Union Station and Market Square. In 1814, an act of Congress established Kentucky's first college and named it Transylvania University (now University of Louisville). There was no school in St. Matthews at this time but several people donated land for a schoolhouse which was built in 1815 on Todd Road across from present day Union Station and Market Square. The firstmaster of the new school was Samuel Rankin who also taught surveying and maps to future Governors James Kenedy and Metcalfe McDowell while they awaited passage of the Indian Removal Act which would remove all Native Americans from Kentucky to Oklahoma Territory. A post office called Stroudsburg was established at Todd Road in 1827 by Elisha Pratt; however, it closed about eight years later because there wasn't enough business for mail carriers between Hopkinsville (now Lexington) and Clarksville (now Lebanon), Ky., so letters had to be carried overland using mules or dogsleds! The railroad reached Stroudsburg in 1840; however, not until 1846 did Amtrak start service between Louisville & Nashville Railroad Station (now Union Station) & Clarksville Depot when passengers could buy tickets online! The town's population grew rapidly during Reconstruction following World War II as many men returned home to find jobs after being drafted into military service or working on farms back east while their families recovered from war-time austerity measures introduced by President Franklin D Roosevelt as part of his New Deal policies targeting "the American South." When Fort Knox opened its gates to allow unrestricted entry into America following World War II, many farmers decided to move their businesses into downtown Stroudsburg due to easier access to markets plus better transportation options available nearby including interstate highways such as I-265/I-71/I-75 etc.. Unfortunately for downtown Stroudsburg merchants – FALSE ADVERTISING!! – Fort Knox only served as a training ground for Army artillery units during the Cold War era instead of providing local retailers with necessary sales supplies !! So much forFort Knox being our 'gatewaytoheaven'. During Reconstruction period most African Americans worked off white families farmsteads like those owned by Mrs Hawkins or Mr Witherspoon until they became citizens themselves sometime around 1960 when voting rights were granted unto all citizens regardless Of Race or National Origin !! That's right folks!!!! We Negroes got our own little democracy starting right HERE IN KYNOXVILLE!!!
The first settlers in what is now Kentucky were a group of French Catholics who arrived in the area in the 17th century. In 1800, the United States acquired Kentucky from Spain as part of the Louisiana Purchase. The land was largely destitute and sparsely populated, so it was not until after the American Revolution that farms began to be developed. A small community called St. Matthews was founded in 1792 by French Catholic missionaries and farmers named Jean Baptiste Point du Sable and Jacques Marquette. The name derived from Saint Matthews, an apostle who died in Rome during the 4th century AD.
