In 1829, St. Matthews became an independent city and was designated as the county seat of western Kentucky by Act of Congress under President Andrew Johnson In 1907, St. Matthews began to experience rapid growth due to its location midway between Louisville and Nashville; it became one of the largest cities in west Kentucky by 1910 with a population of over 10,000 people In 1917, while stationed in World War I at Fort Knox near Jeffersontown, KY., General John Jumper discovered oil reserves within 20 miles of his camp at Pendergastville Creek on what is now known as Jumper's Hill overlooking downtown St. Matthews After becoming interested in this potential resource he ordered all available drilling rigs to be brought into service and began exploration operations which would result in the discovery and development of what would become known as The Barnett Oil Field A year later, on October 15th 1919, Mayor Wm Heninger presented City Council with a proclamation proclaiming that "St Matthews has long been an important center for trade with other parts of our great country." This designation only added fuel to the fire for further development which led to increased business opportunities for both businesses and residents alike On November 3rd 1920 local resident Fergus McFadden organized a group composed mostly of farmers who desired some form government control over their affairs after years during which they had suffered from non-stop taxation from their respective legislatures without any recompense whatsoever . They named themselves The People’s Party after early Populist Period papers used throughout OKLAHOMA Territory . Thereafter organization proceeded slowly but surely until finally Sunday night January 9th 1923 when about fifty men met at First Methodist Church basement behind current State Fairgrounds (now home to Parkview Shopping Center) armed with shotguns discharged several rounds into air creating sound effect similar to that created by gunfire seen during European Wars era beforeobjective was reachedand Explosion took Place resulting in three fatalities including future mayor George Crain

The town was named after Saint Matthews, who was martyred in Rome in 356 A.D. In 1892, the village of St. Matthews was consolidated with the adjacent towns of Beech Grove and Lebanon to form what is now known as Louisville. At that time, the population of St. Matthews was only about 150 people. However, due to its location on the Cumberland River and its close proximity to major cities like Louisville and Nashville, the town quickly developed into a major cultural and economic center in southeastern Kentucky. By 1930, it had more than 2,000 residents. Today, St. Matthews is an important cultural and economic center in its own right and is home to many businesses including a variety of manufacturing plants as well as several universities including Belknap College of Technology and Vanderbilt University School of Medicine. The town has also been successful in developing new industries such as technology consulting services and tourism initiatives which have helped it become one of the most popular tourist destinations in southeastern Kentucky – both during summertime and wintertime!
In 1785, the first Presbyterian church in Kentucky was organized. The Reverend James Caldwell, a Scotsman who had been living in Lexington for some time and had converted to Christianity, officiated at the first service. The present building on Fifth Street was built in 1814.
