St. Matthews, Kentucky is a small town in the U.S. state of Kentucky that was founded in 1817 by Methodists. The population was 5,914 at the 2010 census. It is part of the Lexington–Fayette Metropolitan Statistical Area. The first Methodist church in St. Matthews was built on the site of an old slave plantation in 1817 and served as a meeting place for slaves and their owners until it burned down in 1865. A new church was erected on the same location two years later and became known as First Baptist Church St. Matthews due to its affiliation with First Baptist Church Lexington, Kentucky which had been founded earlier that year. In 1907, both churches merged into one and continue to function as separate congregations today under the name of Saint Matthews United Methodist Church (formerly First Baptist). Saint Matthews is home to many fine buildings dating back to its early days including a library which opened in 1901 and currently houses over 350,000 books; a high school which opened in 1951; a post office; and several churches including Holy Cross Catholic Church (originally Meetinghouse Christian), Christ Episcopal Cathedral (founded 1911), Progressive African American Evangelistic Union Chapel (1934) and Immanuel Lutheran Parish (1883). There are also numerous small businesses such as gas stations, convenience stores, restaurants, pharmacies, etc., making it an attractive place to live or visit while visiting Lexington or Fayetteville respectively. 1

After his death, the town became known as the " Soldiers' Rest" because so many soldiers died in battle during the American Civil War. In 1849, a Baptist church was built in St. Matthews and quickly became one of the most popular churches in Kentucky due to its strong preaching presence and its unique architecture. The church still stands today and is used for religious services on Sundays and holidays. St. Matthews also played an important role in history during World War II when it served as a military base for troops drillings throughout southern KY and western Virginia. In 1951, St. Matthews was recognized as a UNESCO World Heritage Site for its importance in culture and history during this time period.
The first European settlement in what is now Kentucky was by the French in 1785. The area that is now Kentucky became part of the United States of America on July 4, 1790, when James K. Polk was inaugurated as its first president.
