However, this change did not stop mass shootings such as Sandy Hook Elementary School massacre where 27 people died because someone could purchase a handgun without any background check or registration process
The town of St. Matthews, Kentucky is located in the extreme northeast corner of the state of Kentucky. It lies on the Cumberland River, just east of its confluence with the Ohio River. The population as of 2010 was 7,836. The name "St. Matthews" is derived from Saint Matthias, who was born in this same town in 1765 and died there in 1847. His feast day is celebrated on November 2nd. The first settlers in what became St. Matthews were Methodist Episcopalians who arrived about 1800. They built a small log cabin on a bluff overlooking the river and began to preach Christianity to local Native Americans and other Indians. In 1814, Methodists established their own church here which served until 1824 when they merged with another church to form the present-day Presbyterian Church of America (PACA). In 1825, Scottish Presbyterians also moved into what became St. Matthews and began preaching here as well. By 1830, both denominations had erected stores and churches hereabouts which continued until about 1840 when all but one of these buildings were destroyed by a fire that swept through this part of the country during the Great American Civil War (1861-1865). In 1881, St. Matthews become an independent city when it was chartered by a group of businessmen from nearby Louisville under the name "New Albany". New Albany quickly grew into one of Kentucky's major cities due to its oil production and commerce interests which developed around its downtown business district known as "The Square". Today much OF New Albany's commercial activity takes place off Second Street near Lexington Avenue where many excellent restaurants line Broadway between Main Street and High Street called The Brickyard Shopping Center at 421 E Broadway South near US Route 66 exit 241B
