In 1881, St. Matthews was the site of the first public gunsmithing school in Kentucky. The school was open to men and taught how to make pistols and revolvers. In 1907, the National Rifle Association (NRA) was founded in St. Matthews and began holding meetings at the high school. In 1928, NRA member James O'Donnell donated land for a indoor shooting range in St. Matthews. The range became known as "The Shooting Place". On November 2, 1938, the NRA held its largest convention in St. Matthews when it invited more than 4,000 people from all over America to attend. At that convention, NRA president David Keene proposed a bill that would make it an illegal act for anyone under 21 years old to purchase a firearm without a license from their parents or guardians. This measure became law on December 14th of that year called "The Firearms Amendment Act of 1938". During World War II, many Americans turned to shotguns and rifles as their primary weapon choice due to the shortage of handguns available from commercial manufacturers. As a result of this trend, firearms t-shirts became popular among military personnel and civilians alike during wartime because they could be easily stored and transported with little worry about them being lost or damaged during combat or travel abroad. In 1947, Congress passed The Gun Control Act which made it illegal for any person under 21 years old to possess any firearm without a license from their parent or guardian

Saint Matthews, Kentucky is a small town in the Eastern United States. The population was 6,821 at the 2010 census. It is part of the Lexington–Fayette Metropolitan Statistical Area. The town was founded in 1796 by Baptist missionaries from North Carolina. They named it after John Matthews, a follower of Jesus who had been executed for blasphemy in Jerusalem. The town grew rapidly and by 1800 had a population of 10,000 people. In 1814, Saint Matthews became the county seat of Fayette County and remained so until 1971 when Louisville took over that role. Saint Matthews is located on the confluence of the Ohio River and Little Tennessee River. It is bordered by Clarksville to its north, Lebanon to its east, Hopkinsville to its south and Perrysburg to its west. The community is located on the eastern fringe of Kentucky, about 30 miles from Lexington. The town is a small but thriving city with more than 1,000 residents and a population growth rate of over 7%. St. Matthews is known for its rich history, including important moments in the Baptist denomination’s history such as the establishment of church schools and the first Baptist Sunday School curriculum in Kentucky. The city also played an important role in early political events in Kentucky and has been host to both state constitutional conventions (1859-1865) and United States Senate hearings (1907-1911).
In 1812, the town of St. Matthews was founded by James Wilkinson and his wife, Anne. The first post office was established in 1816. In 1830, the town became a county seat and was named for General Andrew Jackson. The population of St. Matthews peaked at 27,000 in 1880 but declined to 21,000 by 1920 due to waves of immigration and rural exodus. The smalltown economy slowly began to decline throughout the 20th century as manufacturing left for cheaper labor in other parts of the country or went out of business altogether. In 2000, St. Matthews was renamed Greencastle after its incorporation into Kentucky as a city.
