By 1800, a small community had grown around the trading post on the site where present-day downtown stands today. In 1812, Reverend James Mckinney founded what would become known as Westminster Presbyterian Church here in what is now east St Matthews Avenue. It was here that McKinney served as its first pastor and laid the foundation for what would become one of America's largest Protestant denominations with over 2 million members worldwide by 1914. In 1881, when King George Washington visited this area, he gave a sermon entitled "A New Jerusalem." This sermon helped spur many people to move to this part of Kentucky and make St Matthews their new home – including many prominent Americans such as Benjamin Franklin and James Ketchum Sr., both of whom are buried there today. After World War II ended, much economic growth took place in nearby Louisville which led to increased development around downtown St Matthews; however, much of that growth has been replaced by low-income housing initiatives throughout downtown since then (a result of legislation passed during Mayor David Briley's term). Today Downtown St Matthews remains one Of America's most vibrant neighborhoods with nearly 200 businesses and more than 700 residents living within easy walking distance of each other on three blocks bounded by Vine Street on one side, Market Street on the other side and First Avenue on the third block – making it easily accessible for anyone interested in shopping or cultural experiences across dozens if not hundreds of restaurants and attractions statewide! A large percentage (approximately 60%)of all kids attending public schools within two blocks radius attend charter schools or private schools; while almost all adults working within two blocks radius are employed either full time or part time outside their homes!

In the 1830s, St. Matthews was home to one of the largest forced labor operations in America, known as the "Matthews Slave Outlet". The slave trade ended in 1848, but the town continued to thrive thanks to its many commercial ventures. By 1861, St. Matthews had become an important rail junction and manufacturing center on the Ohio River. However, during the American Civil War, much of St. Matthews were destroyed by Union forces during the Battle of Springfield Armory. After the war, most of what remained of St. Matthews slowly died off over time due to economic decline and neglect. However, in recent years there has been a renewed effort to revive interest in this once- vibrant community and make it a more thriving place for everyone involved – from residents who live here today to those who have made it their home over the years.
The Parish of St. Matthews was established in 1786 and named for the English martyr, SaintMatthew. The parish is located in eastern Kentucky on the border of West Virginia and Tennessee. In 1801, the parish was erected into a town, with a population of 1,000 people. The town was abandoned in 1810 after it was destroyed by a severe winter. In 1824, the town was re-established as an independent parish with a population of 514 people. The parish lost its independence in 1925 when it merged with neighboringParish of Uptown to formthe present Parish of St. Matthews and Uptown.
