St. Matthews is a town in Hardin County, Kentucky, United States. The population was 1,827 at the 2010 census. It is part of the Elizabethtown, KY Metropolitan Statistical Area. The first settlers in what is now St. Matthews were Methodist Episcopal refugees who came overland from Tennessee in 1814. They named their town after John Wesley's father, Rev. William Matthews (1773-1847). The first post office was established in 1824 and was called Good Hope until it changed its name to St. Matthews in 1829 due to being adjacent to what is now Elizabethtown, KY. The first courthouse was built on the banks of the White River in 1830 and served as the seat of government for Hardin County until it moved to Unionville in 1857. In 1865, there were only 342 people living in St. Matthews when General Ulysses S Grant arrived with his army during the American Civil War and he decided that this small county would be better off uninfested by Union troops so he ordered all civilian male residents between the ages of 25 and 54 years old to leave within two weeks or they would be drafted into service as soldiers under Confederate General Jubal Early's Army of Northern Virginia! In honor of General Grant's visit, a tablet honors him at First Baptist Church where he officiated at services on October 16th 1865 while still ten miles away from our town! After General Grant left for home we slowly began rebuilding but it wasn't until 1870 that our school district formed which included both St. Matthews and neighboring towns such as Elizabethtown proper including today'sElizabethtown University just south of downtown! We also experienced some difficult times during this time such as losing our library building during World War II which caused many local businesses to close down; however we bounced back quickly with construction of an even larger library which opened its doors again in 1994! Today we continue to thrive thanks to our strong community spirit and dedication towards education!

When the area that is now St. Matthews was first settled in the 1700s, it was a small trading post called "Winchester." The first white people to live in what is now St. Matthews were French settlers who arrived in 1765. They named the small town after Saint Matthias Parish, France. Over time, other groups of settlers also moved into what is now St. Matthews and began to develop their businesses and establish families. In 1819, the land around present day St. Matthews was purchased by Colonel James Wilkinson from several Native American tribes for $2,000 dollars cash. He then laid out a townsite on the site which included a church and schoolhouse. The townsite quickly became an important center for trade and commerce because of its location between Winchester and Louisville on the Ohio River. Over time, additional businesses were opened up including a grocery store and post office which remain operational to this day. The town's unique architecture has been preserved through many changes over time including additions and alterations made to the buildings by various developers or residents over the years! Today, Saint Matthews remains an important community with strong ties to its history both before and after World War II. It continues to be a hub for cultural experiences as well as economic development thanks to its status as a manufacturing center for Kentucky products such as bourbon whiskey and jeans!
On December 12, 1792, Kentucky became a state. The name “Kentucky” is derived from the Cherokee word Xhosa, meaning “place of the deer.” In 1801, President James K. Polk proposed that the United States annex Texas and make Kentucky a part of the new country. The House of Representatives voted to annexation on February 14, 1802 but then quickly rejected it because they felt that Texas should be divided between Mexico and the United States. On March 4th,1802, President James K. Polk approved Annexation and it was ratified by Congress on April 3rd.
