Ammo history in St. Matthews, Kentucky began with the importation of firearms by the military in the late 1800s. One of the earliest arms dealers in town was John Gentry who traded rifles and shotguns to men and women throughout Kentucky and Tennessee. In 1892, Gentry opened a store on Main Street that became one of the largest gun stores in America. Many famous shooters from across America used Gentry's store as their primary source for firearms during their shooting careers. In 1907, J.B. Higgins built his own gun shop on Third Street in downtown St. Matthews, which became known as "The Gun Shop of The World." Higgins remained proprietor until his death in 1944. During World War II, Higgins produced over 1 million guns for the U.S. military and sold them worldwide to buyers including Japan, Nazi Germany, Italy, Spain and Portugal. In 1951, Don Easley reopened The Gun Shop of The World after purchasing it from Higgins' heirsqueried estate. Easley is considered one of St Matthews' most notable entrepreneurs and has been involved with many local businesses such as banking and real estate since he founded The Gun Shop of The World more than 60 years ago

The town of St. Matthews grew rapidly during the early 1800s due to its location on the Cumberland River and its relationship with neighboring Lexington and Louisville. By 1830, there were over 1,000 people living inSt. Matthews and it had become a major industrial center with cotton plantations being one of its main products. However, by 1865, when Union troops invaded Kentucky to help fight against slavery,St. Matthews was destroyed by Confederate forces under General Robert Ewell Jackson. However, subsequent surveys showed that much of the town had actually been rebuilt and became an important center for trade again during Reconstruction years after the war ended. Today, St. Matthews is a quiet small town located just outside of Lexington on KY-27 about 12 miles west of downtown Louisville on I-65/I-468/KY 714/US 421 (the "Jefferson Highway"). It has a population of around 100 residents according to 2010 census figures and is home to several stores including Dunkin' Donuts (opened in 1957), Sheetz (founded 1969), Merrick's Hardware & More (founded 1948) as well as many local restaurants including The Old Dutch KFC restaurant (opened 1955).

The town of St. Matthews began to grow around the church and meetings were held at different locations until 1815 when the present building was erected on the site. In 1834, there was a religious revival in St. Matthews that led to increased population and growth in the community. In 1840, the first local bank was established in St. Matthews with many people contributing money for its construction. The development of general stores and businesses followed until 1958 when Prohibition ended which caused business shutdowns and social unrest in the community that led to several fires over the next few years
