At this time, many people believed that George Washington had been born in Kentucky instead of Virginia because his family lived near Danville before he moved to Philadelphia to become president.Kentucky Governor James Moulton Browne proposed renaming Anson County Kentuckiana on November 15, 1924; however, no action was taken because it lacked support from both state government and county commissioners. In 1931, an actwas passed changethe name ofAnson County back to Somerset when it merged with Mercer County following a referendum vote by residents. Somerset, Kentucky is a small town located in Hardin County, Kentucky. The population was 1,834 at the 2010 census. Somerset was founded in 1815 and named for John Somerset, an early settler. In 1838, the towns of Cutten and Easton were merged into Somerset. The village of Westville was annexed to Somerset in 1955. The first mention of a settlement called Somersett appears to have been made by Captain David Thompson when he visited the area in 1785. He noted that there were two settlements near present-day Somerset which he thought might be future sites for a post office because they were both very fertile with plenty of game available. Captain Thompson named one of these settlements after himself - "Somerset". In 1818, Nicholas Bache rendered services as law enforcement officer for Hardin County and served until his death in 1837. On February 3rd, 1838, Congress passed an act creating Hardin County including part of what is now Somerset Township. At this time, it had only a population of about twenty people and no courthouse or jail! The new county courthouse was built on the current site of the Post Office building in 1840 and still stands today. On July 20th, 1850 local resident James Crain became the first person to vote when he registered to vote at the new courthouse during election season. The voting process wasn't popular then as it is now - residents had to go door-to-door obtaining ballots! A store opened up on Main Street in 1865 by Jno Hennig who later became mayor of Manchester (now Elizabethtown). This store closed around 1950 but its remains can still be seen on State Route 231 northeast of town limits where it once stood next to a large barn dating back to 1870 - Now used as a daycare center! In 1886 William Ahern started milling flour from wheat that he had purchased from John Duffields near present-day Elizabethtown . This mill continued operating until 1907 when it went out of business due to competition from other mills within miles radius! In 1913 Wm Easley started running a grocery store on Spring Road just northwest of town limits which lasted until 1978 when it closed down due to economic conditions! In 1938 Josephine Ahern married Ira Salyer who later ran unsuccessfully for city council several times before dying suddenly at age seventy-six years old in 1984; she left behind three children: Ira Salyer III (1948–2006), Skip Salyer (born 1959) and Jane Salyer Kulp (born 1966). In 1951 local resident Joe Green established Trout Unlimited here which continues operations even today! In 1957 George Ritchie opened his restaurant/bar across from Post Office called "Ritchie's" serving Americanized versions thereof until its closure around 1990; all evidence suggests that this restaurant also functioned as a post office over time! Today you can find remnants Of this building including foundations but no structure extant inside or outside...granted much has changed since then :(
