It is the county seat of Marshall County and home to the Somerset School District. At that time there were no towns in Marshall County and no school district. In 1848, John Fenton founded Fentonville as an independent village on his farm near present-day Somerset. In 1862, settlers from Indiana began arriving in what became Somerset and built a log cabin on the banks of the river. The first store opened there in 1865 under the name of Green's Store and continued to operate until 1984 when it closed because of budget cuts by then- Mayor Donny Hathaway Sr.. The second store open there was Brown & Sons Hardware which operated until 1971 when it also closed due to budget cuts by then-Mayor Donny Hathaway Jr.. However, tourism continued to be a major industry throughout these years with many visitors coming for events like rodeos and golf tournaments at local courses across town such as Mountain Top Golf Course (now known as PGA course) and White Sands Golf Course (now known as Stillwater Hills Golf Course). Somerset, Kentucky is a small town in Johnson County, Kentucky, United States. The population was 1,035 at the 2010 census. It is one of the most rural areas in Johnson County and has a total area of just 3.2 square miles (8 km²). The town was founded by English settlers in 1814. At first it was known as "New Somerset." In 1846 the name was changed to "Somerset" after John Somers, who had come from Stratford-on-Avon, Connecticut as part of the great migration that started in the 1840s to escape Potato Famine in Ireland. The community became known for its white cotton plantations and wealthy farmers until recently when many of those estates have been auctioned off and much of their history removed from the community. The original two churches in Somerset were both built around 1830: First Baptist Church on Main Street and then Bethel Methodist Episcopal Church on Park Avenue. They are now both gone but their remains can be seen at nearby Mount Sterling Cemetery which also contains a small museum about early settlers in Somerset and other surrounding communities.
The town of Somerset was chartered on November 1, 1811 by a group of farmers and merchants. The name is derived from the Middle English word "Somerset," which means "vale of the Somerset people." The first settler in what is now Somerset was John Rolfe, who landed on the present-day site in 1792. In 1819, citizens of neighboring Knoxville petitioned for incorporation as a separatetown. On March 6, 1821, Knoxville residents voted to become a town and incorporated as such. On October 11, 1826, Somerset became part of the new county of Henry County when it was created from parts of Knoxville and Lawrence County. In 1840, when the Henderson Act took effect increasing land grant prices in Kentucky, settlers began to arrive in large numbers in western Henry County. Some early settlers were Jeptha Goodloe and his brother John Goodloe Sr., Isaac Gist and his son George Gist (the father of Congressman George Gist), Isaac Newmark (a farmer who donated land for what is now Riverbend Park) and Edward Dickinson (the owner of Dickinson's Furniture Store). On December 12, 1849, James Denny organized a wagon train consisting mostly men over age 40 to start eastward across country to create a new home ground for newly minted American citizens called Oregon Territory. After reaching Indiana Stateline late on December 26 they stopped at Somerset on January 3rd 1850 before continuing westwards towards Springfield Illinois.
