Somerset is a town in and the county seat of Somerset County, Kentucky, United States. The population was 9,846 at the 2010 census. It is part of the Louisville metropolitan area. The name derives from an early English settlement on the riverfront called Somerset Place. The first settlers in what is now Somerset were Native Americans who had been living there for several hundred years when a group of Englishmen arrived in 1690 to start trading with the natives. The original Anglo-Indian community was known as "The Bayou Company." In 1792, General James Mooney's army destroyed part of this Indian village along with most of surrounding plantations during his campaign against French forces on the Ohio River. In 1807, land grants were made to many individual families around central and eastern Kentucky by President Washington in order to encourage development and improve transportation links between these areas and England. One grant went to John Browning, who named it after himself – Brownsville Plantation near present day Somersetport on the Susquehanna River. Browning developed this land into what is now Somerset County by building roads, planting crops and raising livestock. He also built mills which became famous throughout central Kentucky for their production of woolen cloth and other items such as tanning hides and leather. His holdings included much of present day western Somerset County as well as parts of eastern Jefferson County including Bellefonte (later Bellefontaine) Village (now Elizabethtown). When World War II began, many farmers joined up in defense efforts because they believed that Germany would attack America first because she was a Axis power allied with Nazi Germany; however, no German attacks happened although British forces bombed American cities during that war - something which Germans were not shy about doing given their experience during World War I atrocities such as gas chambers used against Jews in Europe).
