A smallpox epidemic in 1846 destroyed much of the town but it rebuilt quickly with new construction including a courthouse, hospital (now known as Vanderbilt University Medical Center), Masonic Lodge No. 1 (the first lodge meeting on American soil), three restaurants (later bought out by Applebee's Restaurant Group), four stores/cafés (later bought out by Kroger Co.), an ice cream company ( later acquired by Ben & Jerry's ), twelve homes/condos (), five schools () In 1861 the Union Army attacked Fort Donelson in Tennessee; more than 5500 people were killed or wounded in what is now called "The Battle of Somerset." The battle helped spurKentucky into seceding from the United States at that time Somerset has since experienced significant growth with both its residential districts as well as its retail corridors becoming increasingly diversified with anchor tenants such as Macy's Department Store opening numerous locations within walking distance of each other throughout most downtown areas while smaller independents continue to thrive ().
