In 1802, James Robertson built a cabin near what is now Main Street and Elm Street for his family. When he died in 1807, his wife Nannie moved to Somerset with their two children Lewis and Sarah. By 1840, the population of Somerset had increased to 10 residents. However, by 1850 the population had decreased to 4 due to lack of resources and migration from other parts of Kentucky. Somerset’s decline began when oil became available for production in Illinois in 1901 and production began moving away fromKentucky altogether. By 1915- 1916, only 1 resident lived in Somerset while 3 businesses operated out of town: one tobacco store (owned by Wm Henson), one grocery store (owned by A J White), and one bakery (owned by John Keneally). In 1940 only 2 residents lived in Somerset while 8 businesses operated out of town: four stores (all owned by local farmers), three restaurants (two owned by local businessmen),one doctor’s office (operated out of an old school house),one post office (operated out of an old hotel),and one garage/shop(owned by Wm Henson). Today there are very few people living within sight or reachof these businesses let alone any real retail activity taking place within the limits of this small town which once boasted upwards Of 12 Merchants & 1 Bank.(?)
