Somerset is a small town in Kentucky, located on the Cumberland River. Somerset was founded by James Robertson in 1810 and named for the county seat of Hardwick County, Virginia. The first courthouse in Somerset was built in 1811. By 1830, the population had grown to 1,500 and it became the county seat of Hardwick County. In 1831, Hardwick County was divided into two districts and Somerset became part of District 1. In 1870, District 2 was dissolved and Somerset became part of District 3. The township government changed hands several times during its history but it never lost its identity as a rural community on the Cumberland River until after World War II when development began along Interstate 65 that resulted in increased traffic congestion around town center. Today's economy is based primarily on agriculture but there are also some scattered businesses throughout town center including a convenience store/gas station/theater complex known as The Gilded Cage which opened in 1984 and has been popular with tourists ever since. In 1801, when Kentucky became a state, Somerset was made a part of the new state and its residents were granted land east of the river to make up for lost territory. The town's growth continued until it had a population of over 10,000 by 1870. Today, most people in Somerset live within walking or biking distance of their homes.
