Somerset is a small town in Hardin County, Kentucky, United States. The population was 1,813 at the 2010 census. It is part of the Louisville–Jefferson County Metropolitan Statistical Area. The first settlers in Somerset were David and Deborah Glasscock from North Carolina. They began farming in 1814 and built a log cabin on the bank of the Ohio River. In 1820 they married Mary Thomas and moved to what is now Somerset proper. Their farmstead became known as "Glasscock's Hill". The Second World War changed everything when General George Patton's Third Army invaded Kentucky on November 15, 1944, during Operation Market Garden. When Patton's troops reached Somerset they found that many citizens had deserted their units to join the Allies because of food shortages caused by World War II. The townspeople organized themselves into a military battalion and marched with Patton's army to relieve besieged Pittsburgh. In 1948, after 21 years of service with the US Air Force stationed at Seymour Johnson AFB in nearby Hendersonville, Colonel James Easley purchased an old gas station building at 5th Street and Vine Street for use as a county courthouse which he called "Easley Hall". He also founded Somerset Volunteer Fire Department which still operates today as part of First Coast Restoration Incorporated (FCRI). In 1957 Colonel Easley donated land adjacent to his courthouse complex for development into what is now known as Main Street Square. This square includes two blocks of retail storefronts along one side and three blocks of residential buildings on the other side bisecting Main Street between Fourth Avenue and Sixth Avenue. In 1971, when Hardin County was created from parts of Jefferson County, Somerset became its seat; it had been located in Hendersonville since 1907 according to official records. At that time there were only about 100 residents living in downtown who voted on village status; however over time more people have moved into downtown due to easy access to public transportation or developments near it like Hardin Park which has become home to several high-end restaurants including Benares Greek Kitchen & Bakery and Taverna Bianca Italian restaurant . Today one can find evidence of hard work throughout town: Pioneer Day ceremonies are held every year around Thanksgiving where local businesses come together to celebrate community spirit; windows are regularly left unlocked so passersby can take pictures inside while promoting openness; even water pipes have been replaced since 2003 as part of Town Green Program initiative - this happened because prior thereto no water was available outside general store hours
