Somerset, Kentucky is a town in and the county seat of Somerset County, Kentucky, United States. The population was 9,846 at the 2010 census. It is part of the Louisville–Jeffersonburg–Bloomington Metropolitan Statistical Area. The first permanent settlers in what is now Somerset County were two families from Maryland who arrived in 1786. They named their new land "Somerset" after an old Englishman who had settled near Bath, England. In 1801, General James Wilkinson founded the city of Louisville on the riverfront of this same county and named it for his friend and mentor, General George Washington. At that time there were only a few hundred people living in all of Kentucky because much of the area was still part of Indian Territory under military occupation. In 1825, General John Covington organized a group of men to purchase 1 million acres (4 square miles) east of present-day Lexington in what is now eastern Kentuckiana for $5 per acre (1/2 sq km). This became known as Covington Purchase Land Act and helped define Kentucky as a white man's country. The first courthouse was built here in 1827 on Court Street just north of High Street today's downtown core. During Reconstruction following the American Civil War (1865-1877), Somerset County voted overwhelmingly for Republican Ulysses S. Grant over Democrat Andrew Johnson because they believed he would protect their rights as former Confederate soldiers had been permitted to remain with Union forces instead of being pardoned or deported like many others convicted during that period. Because Grant refused to give these men amnesty and ordered them immediately deported back to their states' borders – many eventually died trying – some residents began referring to themselves as "No More Rebels". In 1870, when railroads reached this corner state by way of Louisville—then one small community sprawled along three rivers – developers saw an opportunity to build terminals right next to existing coal mines so trains could bring supplies into town from outside suppliers while also providing employment for local miners and other workers during construction season; this led directly to development around Depot Square today’s downtown core where warehouses have long sat since being replaced by modern office buildings and residences dating back more than 100 years ago! Somerset, Kentucky is a small town in the eastern part of the state of Kentucky. The population was 1,362 at the 2010 census. Somerset is located in Breathitt County. The first settler in Somerset was George Smith who arrived on July 24, 1819. He and his wife, Martha Jane, founded a log cabin on what is now known as Post Road west of the present day Walmart shopping center. In 1825, John Prentice built a dam across the Raccoon River to provide irrigation for his farmstead and mill. In 1828, an act of Congress designated Baptist churches as botanical gardens and endowed them with land that includes much of today's Somerset community. The first post office was established in 1865, but it closed its doors several times before it finally opened its door on May 5, 1886 under the name "Somerset." Today's downtown area began to take form around this time when residents started purchasing lots adjacent to their homes for development into town centers or commercial districts. In 1907-08 when construction began on what would become Interstate 65 (now US-24), many new businesses moved into this growing section of town which would later be called Broad Ripple Business Park. It wasn't until 1978 when Interstate 66 (now I-65)was constructed through town that most residents could journey away from their small towns lifestyle and begin enjoying all that modern day Somerset has to offer such as schools, shopping malls and job opportunities outside their hometown limits!
