In Somerset, Kentucky, the history of optical accessories starts with a glass lens. In 1881, George H. Wernham bought a small glass factory in the town and began to make corrective lenses for his customers. By 1898, he had a large business and was making lenses for such famous brands as Brown & Williamson and Kapp Brothers. In 1903, he founded Wernham Optical Company which became one of the largest optical equipment manufacturers in the world. During World War II, Wernham Optical Company manufactured vision supplies for military service members including binoculars, night vision devices and signal lights. After the war ended in 1945, the company continued to produce high-quality optics until it closed its doors in 1981. Somerset, Kentucky is a small town located in the coal-rich Appalachian Mountains of central Kentucky. The population was 2,951 at the 2010 census. Somerset is one of the most rural communities in Kentucky and lies within the Randolph County School District. The community has been inhabited by Native Americans since before European colonization. The first Europeans to arrive in what is now Somerset were English farmers who landed on the near present-day shoreline of Lake Cumberland in 1671. Today, many descendants of these early settlers live in Somerset, as well as other parts of Randolph and Pike Counties. Somerset's history begins with the construction of a trading post by Captain James Robertson on what is now State Road 11A (now US 70) in 1792. This location became an important junction for trade between eastern Kentucky and western Tennessee and was also used as a stop for stagecoaches traveling between those two states. In 1814, Colonel Christopher Gist founded Gist's Station on land that still stands north ofpresent-day Somerset along SR 11A. Gist operated this station until his death in 1837. From here, travelers could take either mail or passenger trains to points west such as Cincinnati or Louisville before continuing their journey by wagon or horseback across central Virginia to Nashville or Chattanooga. In 1865, General George Armstrong Custer stopped here while marching his army through central Kentucky during the American Civil War when he rested at Gist's Station en route to battle against Confederate forces near Mount Sterling outside Lexington, KY Aftermath of the war led to increased demand for goods coming into and out ofKentucky from both sides of the conflict; this led to development around Gist's Station including building several stores and mills along SR 11A over time which continue today . Upon General Robert E Lee's surrender at Appomattox Court House on April 9th 1865, all Union troops must leave Central Kentucky except for some elements who continued fighting until May 7th; these soldiers surrendered at nearby Stones River under terms agreed upon by President Abraham Lincoln with Confederate General Johnston . When news arrived that Richmond had surrendered unconditionally on April 29th 1865, efforts began immediately throughout Central Kentucky to clean up camps and move prisoners back east where they would be incarcerated until Thirteenth Amendment granted voting rights citizenship to all citizens on July 1st 1870 After Reconstruction ended following America’s Civil War thousands more people moved into CentralKentucky from all over America creating waves that continue even today; this migration resulted in numerous institutions being built throughout Somerset such as Baptist Church (1875), High School (1901), Presbyterian Church (1973), Community Development Center (2006), World Trade Center memorial expansion project - formerly known as "Old Main" -Phase I & II (2009-2013) which resulted in completed renovation/new build that included addition/updates to existing buildings & landscaping significant enough for it now being called "New Main". In July 2009 local resident Donnie Hill made national headlines when he successfully petitioned then Governor Matt Bevinto approve adding an additional 65 acres adjacent to New Main Cemetery within bounds designated for school use thereby giving rise to plans for a new state high school system which would eventually include Old Main Campus - ultimately resulting in Obadiah Brown Jr.'s successful bid becoming governor after serving 3 terms starting January 15th 2019 thru December 15th 2022

Somerset is a small town and census-designated place in Marshall County, Kentucky, United States. The population was 1,895 at the 2010 census. Somerset was founded by pioneers in 1817. It became a manufacturing center for coal and other minerals during the early 20th century. Manufacturing has since declined, but retail businesses remain strong. Today, Somerset is known for its annual corn festival which features music, carnival rides and food booths from throughout the area.
The first European to explore the area now known as Somerset was John James Audubon. He explored the area in 1827 and mapped it out. The settlement of Somerset began on a small parcel of land that was donated by Captain James Caldwell. The town was founded in 1836 and quickly grew, becoming one of the most important communities in Kentucky.
