Somerset is a city in and the county seat of Somerset County, Kentucky, United States. The population was 7,080 at the 2010 census. It is located on the Cumberland River. In 1792, General James Wilkinson moved his army from settlements near Lebanon to take position along the Cumberland River against British forces under General William Howe. After four months of hard fighting, Wilkinson's army retreated and returned to its original location near Lebanon. The city was founded in 1859 by Colonel John J. Hardin as a post office named for him. The first postmaster was Moses Waddell. In 1871, it became one of the original twenty-six townships in Somerset County when it was created from parts of Amherst Township and Lebanon Township. The town changed its name to Somerset in 1907 when it became part of the new consolidated community of Lexington–Fayetteville which included all but part of what is now Somerset County. Somerset, Kentucky is a small town in Taney County, Kentucky, United States. The population was 1,814 at the 2000 census. It is the county seat of Taney County. Somerset was founded in 1825 and incorporated as a city in 1851. The city was abandoned by 1955 and now occupies only part of its former boundaries. The first settlers to Somerset were farmers who arrived during the early 1800s. By 1825, they had built a few log homes on what is now downtown Somerset. They were followed by other farmers and business people who soon established businesses in the town. Today, most residents are self-employed or work in local businesses. One of the earliest industries in Somerset was agriculture which continued to be an important part of the community until after World War II when industry became more significant. In addition to farming and manufacturing, some businesses that have been active in Somerset over time include: Grocery stores (1922), tennis courts (1926), auto parts store (1928), bank (1930), insurance company (1931), post office (1945), nightclubs such as The Cumberland Club and Blue Grass Inn (1959-present) and a variety of restaurants including Mrs.'s Place tavern which closed down in 2009 but reopened as an Italian restaurant later that year; two CVS pharmacies opened up near Walmart across from the old courthouse square; several bars/restaurants opened up around town during the late 1970s through early 1990s when there wasn't much available elsewhere; glassblower Donnie Darko started making blown glass windows out of recycled materials from construction sites starting around 1984; high school athletic teams have won seven state championships between 1951-1994; two stadiums have been built since 2000 - one for basketball and one for football - both used mostly for baseball events rather than professional football games; three churches have served township residents: First Baptist Church moved from its original site on Main Street to Third Avenue North before being replaced by Christ Lutheran Church following fire damage done to that building during Hurricane Floyd in 1999; Second Baptist Church moved back into their original location on Market Square after moving out after Katrina hit New Orleans a few years earlier Today's economy is based largely on services with some light manufacturing operations still continuing along with some agricultural production going on within close proximity to urban areas like Louisville and Nashville due to increased competition from those cities' economies overall while smaller towns throughout Appalachia continue struggling economically because they don't share those same resources or opportunities that larger towns do
