Somerset is one of two towns in Breathitt County and one of four towns in Hopkins County. The town started as a post office on November 1, 1851. It was named for Oliver Hazard Perry, an American soldier who fought in the Mexican-American War and then served as governor of Texas from 1853 to 1861. In 1874, it became a city. The first school in Somerset was built on what is now the corner of Main and Market Streets. The building still stands and is used as a community center today. In 1865, when Kentucky became a state, it included Somerset as part of its territory. When that state seceded from Tennessee on January 15, 1861, Somerset joined with Kentucky to form the new Confederate States of America. During World War II, Seymour Aircraft made their manufacturing plant available to local farmers for use during the war years because there were no manufacturers in wartimeKentucky had not ratified the US Constitution which prohibited slavery so military production had to be done through private companies rather than by government hands
