Somerset is a small town in Johnson County, Kentucky, United States. The population was 1,751 at the 2000 census. The name of the town comes from the Somerset River which flows through it. It is part of the Louisville/Fayette Metropolitan Statistical Area. The first permanent settler in what is now Somerset was James Witherspoon who arrived in 1784. He bought 640 acres (250 hectares) of land around present-day Somerset on the banks of the river and began to farming it. In 1812, Witherspoon's son John Fenton purchased an additional 344 acres (15 hectares). By 1830, all but 20 percent of the land had been bought or sold in this way. By 1840, there were over 100 people living in Somerset and by 1860 only about 30 remained because much of what had once been farmland was taken up with new homes and businesses built in that decade for workers commuting to larger cities such as Louisville and Lexington. The town's current form took shape when a group of men from nearby Bellefontaine decided to start a cotton gin near where today's Post Office stands. They named their business "Bellefontaine Manufacturing Company" after one of their own daughters who had married an agent for that company while she was still a student at Vanderbilt University Law School. When production became too difficult to continue without more space, they moved their operations to what is now Main Street and turned out three bales per day—enough cloth for just two dozen family members each—before bankruptcy forced them into receivership in 1873."
