Somerset is known for its wide variety of crops such as corn (maize), beans (peas), cottonseed oilseed production (crude oil), hogsheads (fulghorns) baseballs made from Brunswick bluegrass fiber which are used by both high school and collegiate teams throughout central Kentucky; cider making which began in 1778; spiced hay products such as dried applesauce or apple sauce flavored with cinnamon or ginger; hot dogs made fresh at home using pork shoulder that has been brined overnight before cooking over an open fire
