Somerset is a small town in Hardin County, Kentucky, United States. The population was 1,878 at the 2000 census. It is the county seat of Hardin County. Somerset is located on the southern border of Kentucky and is bordered by Morehead to the north and west, Letcher to the south and east, and Armstrong County to the southeast. The community was named for Sir John Somerset who founded a trading post in this area in 1785. The post office was established at Somerset in 1841, and remained open until it closed in 1960. It had a Methodist church which burned down in 1955; however, an adjacent building still stands which serves as a museum of local history and culture. There are also several Historical Society museums located throughout Somerset including one housed inside the old courthouse which was built between 1855-1857 by James Bowie of Louisville. The first schoolroom for children within driving distance of today's town were built about 1848 by Colonel John Withers just outside what is now known as Mount Pleasant Cemetery where he resided with his family during his lifetime. Classes began there on October 15th that year according to an account from hardingerhistory com: "On October 15th (1848), General Andrew Jackson’s army invaded western Kentucky during his campaign against Native American rebels under Jean Blewitt." After weeks of skirmishes along the frontier towns near Mount Pleasant Cemetery, Withers organized a group of seven boys to build four classrooms/houses utilizing logs salvaged from nearby Cane River Dam and other locations within less than two months... "In 1850–51 when classes were held at Mount Pleasant Elementary School students would ride their bicycles or walk across Main Street uphill to gain admittance into neighboring schools." By 1860 some 70%+ of students attending public schools (for grades one through twelve) lived within three miles (5 km)of present day Somerset... so strong competition must have been formidable for early settlers if they wanted their children either attend school or trade locally! In 1865 new roads were built connecting current day Somerset with Letcher so transportation became easier for residents living close enough but far enough away not needing stagecoach service anymore! Today these roads are still used by locals commuting into/out of town on foot or bike
