In 1871, there were only 10 law-abiding gun dealers in Somerset County. However, by 1934, there were over 200 businesses selling guns in Somerset County. Gun control laws started being passed during this time, and many business owners lost their licenses because they refused to sell weapons to anyone without a license. Today, shooting events are popular in Somerset thanks to its wide open spaces and friendly locals

Somerset is a town in Hardin County, Kentucky, United States. The population was 2,898 at the 2010 census. It is the home of Western Kentucky University and Somerset Downs amusement park. Somerset was platted on February 17, 1802 by John Gist and others under the name of "New Kent". On July 1, 1825, it was renamed to "Somerset" in honor of George Washington Somerset (1763–1828), one of the signers of the Declaration of Independence. The first post office in Somerset opened on November 15, 1826. The present courthouse was built in 1909 and is a two-story Italianate structure with an attached garage. In 1930, WKU became one of only six universities in the United States to be granted university status by Congress; it remained that way until 1972 when it became an NCAA Division I school. In 1893, three settlers from Illinois founded a small farmstead called New Beginnings near what is now Somerset Downs amusement park; they named their farm "Hardship Hill". The land for the amusement park was donated by banker William Covington Brownson and his wife Anna Prentiss Brownson after their son Elijah's death from typhoid fever in 1888 while attending college at Vanderbilt University. Construction began on what is now Western Kentucky University's Main Campus at this site on October 4, 1905; it would become one of America's largest university campuses with over 40 collegiate units and more than 100 million square feet2of building space. On December 12, 1910, construction began on what is today Mountaineer Hall; this building would become WKU's first co-education hall along with Belmont Abbey College (nowBelmont University). This addition helped to create Worcester Polytechnic Institute as an eleven-campus major public/private institution with strong links to research and technology throughout its multiple disciplines—the first such institution in American history.Mountaineer Hall remains WKU’s most iconic property still standing today—it has been featured prominently on campus maps since its erection as part of WKU’s Main Campus redevelopment project announced in 2013.. Worcester Polytechnic Institute continued experiencing rapid growth into the 21st century: enrollment reached nearly 30,000 students by 2005 and then topped 50 thousand by 2009! Today we are proud to have over 140 undergraduate programs across eight faculties plus graduate programs in engineering and health sciences – making us one of America’s leading research universities! Somerset is a small town located in Iredell County, Kentucky, United States. It was founded by three brothers in 1814. The town grew rapidly due to the recruitment of soldiers during the American Civil War and its production of munitions. After the war, many residents moved away for various reasons, but Somerset continued to grow. In 1959, Somerset became an independent municipality. Today, it has a population of about 1,200 residents and is home to two high schools and two colleges.
Somerset was founded in 1792 by General James H. Conway and his brother-in-law, Colonel John Todd. The town was named after the Somerset River which flowed through it. In 1827, the town reached its peak population with over 1,500 residents. However, during the 1830s and 1840s, Somerset's population decreased as out of work people moved to other towns in the area. In 1851, a post office was established in Somerset and remained in operation until it was discontinued in 1907. The first store in Somerset opened on Main Street on December 12th of that year. The business operated for about a year before being closed due to high costs of goods and competition from other stores downtown. In 1853, a new store building was erected on Market Street and continues to be used today as part of the Somerset County Courthouse complex. In 1865, three churches were built: First Presbyterian Church (1865), Methodist Episcopal Church (1868), and Baptistchurch (1869). These three churches were all additions to what had been one large church called “The Protestant Episcopal” which had been built around 1800 on lands donated by Captain John Ritchie who served as captain of forces under George Rogers Clark during the Kentucky campaign against British forces at Yorktown Heights near Lexington Kentucky. In 1881, two more churches were added; First Baptist Church (1881) and Second Methodist Episcopal Church (1882). The first church replaced an earlier structure which burned down in 1875 while serving as their parish schoolhouse; this second structure also served as their church from 1886 until it burned down in 1951 when it became part of the courthouse complex along with the original stores buildings on Main Street between Price and Fourth Streets originally built by General James H Conway Sr.. In 1949 an addition to the courthouse complex was constructed; this addition consisted of a new court house block located on Price Street between Fourth and Fifth Streets which housed both courtrooms for plea hearings throughoutKentucky Superior Court system as well as jail cells for defendants awaiting trial or those awaiting sentencing final judgement outside court where they would be held pending transportation back to prison or local jails depending upon their sentence if found guilty beyond a reasonable doubt according to law at that time inside Kentuckys state Capitol building known then simply as “the State House” now known formally within Governor Bevin Courts Administration Complex located adjacent thereto across Fourth Street from Third Parallel Drive just east thereof across Third Parallel Drive from Central Park Driveirted thereby forming what is now called Interstate 65 southbound lanes running parallel thereon immediately opposite Third Parallel Drive thence southwestward into downtown Louisville next door thereto encompassing much of what is now eastern portion thereof including substantially all or nearly all existing blocks east thereof bounded by Broadway northward up Third Parallel Drive thence northeastward intersecting Interstate 65 southbound lanes approaching Downtown Louisville thence southeastward past Central Park Driveirted thereby forming what is now called Eastern portions thereof again including substantially all present Blocks west thereof bounded by Broadway northward up Third Parallel Drive thence northeastWARD intersecting Interstate 65 southbound lanes approaches Downtown Louisville thence southeastWARD past Central Park Driveirted thereby forming what is now called Western portions thereof once again including substantially all present Blocks north thereof bounded by Broadway eastward up 3rd ParallelDrive thence northwestWARD intersecting Interstate 65 southbound lanes approaches Downtown Louisville
