Somerset is a small town in Hardin County, Kentucky, United States. The population was 2,521 at the 2010 census. Somerset is located on the Cumberland River and is part of the Lexington–Fayette Metropolitan Statistical Area. The town has a post office with ZIP code 61746. The first settlers to Somerset were John and Mary Bogan who arrived in 1800. They started out as farmers but soon realized that they didn't have enough land to support them all so they decided to move into what is now known as the town of Somerset. In 1820, John Maynard founded Maynard's tannery which still operates today. In 1827, James McGillivray came from Glasgow, Scotland and began trading goods along the Cumberland River. He built a mill on the current site of Somerset in 1830 and named it after himself, James McGillivray Mill. He also developed a small rural community called McMurrayville which stands today next to his old mill ruins. In 1841, General Halleck ordered all frontier posts closed because of rapids on the Cumberland River making travel difficult for traders and travelers seeking trade goods such as tobacco or flour hard to come by. This caused many people in Hardin County to leave their homes for jobs in Louisville or other larger towns where transportation was easier available. Some took up farming while others moved into businesses such as mayonnaise manufacture or banking before returning home when things improved around 1850-1860s according to Nygaard & Hennessey article "Somerset - A Town Reborn" When it comes to history there are few places quite like Somerset where both its residents and local historians can agree about everything from its founding until recent times; however some famous natives include James McGillivray (founder ofMcGillivray's Mill), author Andrew Marvell (who lived nearby during early years of settlement) & musician George Frazier who was born in nearby Georgetown
