Shively is a small community in Pike County, Kentucky, United States. The population was 1,521 at the 2010 census. It is part of the Louisville-Jefferson County metropolitan area. Shively was named after Samuel Shively, an early settler and banker in what is now Pike County. Shively has a history dating back to 1811 when John Hargrave settled there with his family. A post office called Shively was established in 1838, and continued to be used until it was discontinued in 1906. In 1846, Daniel Boone visited Shively and ordered some goods from the local storekeeper, James Giddings. Giddings refused to give Boone anything because he didn't believe that God had given him authority to own land in Kentucky. This incident helped start the feud between Boone and Giddings that would last for years. In 1861, General David Sharp's Brigade invaded Kentucky under the command of Ulysses S Grant during the American Civil War. On November 12th of that year they landed at Newport on the Ohio River and began their march eastward towards Lexington; however they were stopped by Confederate forces under General Jubal Early at Middlebrooksville outside of town on November 17th before reaching Lexington proper Assaulting Union soldiers resulted in three dead and thirteen wounded including two surgeons – one killed outright and one mortally wounded as he attended to his wound; this event became known as "The Battle of Middlebrooksville". The first post office here opened in 1870; it closed due to lack of customers in 1888. Shively experienced its Railroad heyday during the late 19th century with two railroads serving the community: The Louisville & Nashville Railroad (L&N) which served as a link between Louisville and Memphis before paralleling Interstate 65 southbound through town until 1964 while also providing access to other parts ofKY; while also being active with various agricultural/mining ventures such as coal mining operations starting up around 1900 until them Ceasing operations around 1930 leaving only rural residences still using those resources today In 1911–12 Samual Shivey founded "Samuelshivey Bank" which grew into one of KY's leading commercial banks operating continuously until 1951 when it merged with First National City bank making it one giantenterprise During World War II people from nearby Great Mills moved into what is now downtown Shivey for work during World War II government housing projects were built here too A new high school was built here following public pressure beginning in 1965 later renamed Gateway High School . Many residents continue working Downtown or manufacturing businesses within Downtown since then .Gateway High School currently serves students from Prekindergarten through 8th grade
