Shively is a small town in eastern Kentucky, located about 20 miles northeast of Louisville. The population was 1,527 at the 2010 census. It is the seat of Grant County. Shively is named after Ebenezer Shively, an early settler and one of the first men to locate in what is now eastern Kentucky. Shively was founded by Ebenezer Shively and his family in 1825. The original settlers were farmers who grew corn, wheat, hay and other crops. By 1840, the Shiveys had erected a log cabin on a hill overlooking their village. They continued to live there until 1872 when they sold their land to General John Fenton for $2,000 cash. Fenton built a sawmill and gristmill around this time and renamed the village Shively after himself. The Village of Shivey soon grew into a full-fledged community with its own schools, churches and businesses. In 1892, local citizens voted to incorporate as a town under the name Grant County; however, it took several more years for that decision to be ratified by state officials. In 1925,shivey incorporated as an independent city with its own government; it remains an official part of Grant County today. Today’s residents are descendants of those who first settled in shivey – many are still living here today in homes originally constructed during the late 1800s or early 1900s just outside of downtown – some with ancestors dating back to beforeKentucky became a state!
