The majority of shooting activity takes place within a five-mile radius of the city center. According to data from 2006-2010, there have been 2 shootings that occurred in Shively and 2 shootings that occurred within a five-mile radius of its downtown core. The first shooting took place on October 14, 2006 when a 25-year old man was shot outside a business in the city center. No one was injured in this shooting. The second shooting took place three days later on October 17 when an 18-year old boy was shot inside his own home by his father who had been upset about the recent addition to their family budget for groceries. A new range was built and operated from 1957 to 1959. In 1974, an automatic weapons permitwas issued to John Bowerski of Shively after he successfully passing a handgun safety class offered by the NRA in nearby Hazardville, KY. In 1978-1979, an ordinance went into effect forbidding open carry of handguns without a permit in the town limits. This ordinance was repealed by local voters on November 3rd 1979 following public outcry over such measures as arbitrary enforcement and censorship by city officials%. The first settlers in Shively were James and Sarah Shively who arrived in 1802 from Ireland. They established a farm on what is now State Route 511 south of the present day town center. James Shively died in 1805 and his wife Sarah continued to live there until her death in 1826. In 1827, John Auld moved to Shively from Bairdstown, KY and began to plat out land around what is now Main Street. He named it "Auld's Landing" after himself and his brother-in-law Alexander Auld (1784-1858). Aldrich built a log cabin on the landing which he occupied for several years before selling it to Colonel John McCracken (1781-1857) in 1830. McCracken operated a logging company that included sawmills, grist mills, brickyards and other properties along SR 311 near present day US 41/SR 512 east of town. McCracken also developed some fruit orchards that produced apples and other fruits early in this century; today those trees are still seen scattered about among the nearby homes of the community's original settlers. By 1840, when Kentucky became an state, most of what is now Shively had been platted out as well - with only some small tracts left undeveloped by developers during the late 19th century boom period following Kentucky's admission into the Union as a state.) In 1850 Hiram Sellers settled on property northeast of Main Street just west ofSR 511 - eventually becoming one of Johnson County's most influential men with businesses both inside and outside of local government services including owning numerous stores within 2 miles radius stretching allthe way to Georgetown where he lived until his death at 82 years old in 1907.)
