Shively, Kentucky is home to the world's oldest continuously operated firearms factory and one of the most famous gun ranges in the country. The town has been called both "The Shootout Capital of United States" and "The Gun Mecca of the World." In 1892, Shively was founded by George W. Stephenson as a small farming community named Pleasantville. A year later, Stephenson purchased land east of town to create what would become known as the Stephensons' Rifle Range. The range became operational on April 1, 1893 and quickly became one of America's leading shooting venues. Throughout its history, Shively has been a center for firearm enthusiasts around the world. With its long history of manufacturing firearms and hosting major events such as rifle matches, airgun tournaments, trap shoots and more, it has been an important stop on many shooters' journey to learn how to shoot accurately. Shively is a small town in Johnson County, Kentucky. It was founded in 1853 by Daniel Shively and his wife, Lucy. The population was 1,913 at the 2010 census. Shively is located on the southern border of Johnson County and is about 20 miles (32 km) south of Frankfort. The town was named for Daniel Shively's maternal grandfather, who had moved to Kentucky from Massachusetts in 1821. The first post office in Shively was established in 1854, and it remained open until 1907. In 1898, Shively became the county seat of Johnson County. In 1903, the state legislature passed a bill providing for the creation of a new county withinJohnson County if no other location would be chosen for the seat; this new county would be known asFrankfortshire. The name change toShively came into effect that year. A number of local businesses were founded during the early years of Shively's establishment: an ice cream parlor opened in 1915; a grocery store and post office opened in 1922; and a movie theater opened in 1933. During World War II, local production helped contribute to GDP growth rates in Johnson County; manufacturing goods such as jeans and ammunition were produced at local plants while supplies were available outside the United States.. During much of its history, Shively has been home to several churches: First Presbyterian Church (founded 1865), Methodist Church (founded 1865), Baptist Church (1914), Catholic Parish (1924), LutheranChurch(1898-1983), Episcopal Parish (1966-present). A primary school operated from 1911 until 1978 before being closed down due to budget cuts during the Reagan administration..

He served during World War I and the Korean War and was discharged with the rank of sergeant. After his service ended, he returned home to Mount Pleasant and resumed his career as a farmer. In 1951, Shively began developing land near Mount Pleasant that would become known as The Gables Estate. Today, The Gables Estate is one of Kentucky's most popular tourist destinations and is home to many historical artifacts from Shively's life and times.
