However, recent redevelopment has brought new life to the town thanks to its location by Interstate 65 and easy access to other larger cities such as Lexington and Louisville. As of 2010, there were over 1,000 people living in Shively according to the 2000 census results which shows an increase from 917 counted during that same year

Shively is a small town in Marshall County, Kentucky, United States. The population was 1,049 at the 2010 census. It is part of the Louisville metropolitan area. The first permanent settlers in what is now Shively were Nicholas and Anna Shively, who arrived on horseback from Virginia in 1812. In 1816, Johnnie Davenport and his family moved there from Knoxville, Tennessee; they were the first white people to live in what is now Shively Township. He established a store and post office there on the banks of the White River. In 1827, Captain James Haggard surveyed land comprising present-day Shively Township and made a plat thereof which he named after himself: "Haggard's Forest". The community grew rapidly with new settlers arriving every year until it had a population of 2,000 by 1830. They built homes around an impressive courthouse designed by New Zealand architect James McKenzie (1801-1878). A school was started in 1829 and located at 302 Main Street; it became an important center for education within the township until about 1870 when public schools were discontinued due to financial difficulties caused by wars with Mexico and Indian raids throughout Kentucky. During this time period most of present-day Marshall County was unincorporated territory dedicated to agriculture or ranching; however, some small communities sprang up here including Post Falls (now Lebanon) in 1840s and 1850s due to advances being made by mail carrier George Washington Dixon along Utopia Road which passed through central Shively between 1840s and 1860s expanding farming opportunities into this rural area west of Lexington KY . Most development occurred outside of downtown Shively where several churches/temples stood until recently as well as various factories/machinery plants over time including Jethro Tull's old bell factory building still standing today yielding excellent views down Main Street looking out onto Coal mines & Railroad tracks etc…..This has given much away about daily life here back then especially during prohibition times when things got pretty tight
