Shively was founded on December 12, 1811 by George Washington Shively and his wife Martha Ann Bassett Shively. The first post office in Shively was established on November 1, 1815 by Nicholas Moreland. The present Post Office building was built in 1923 and is located just east of the downtown core of the town. This building served as the original courthouse until 1935 when a new courthouse was constructed on Main Street in downtown Shivelty. The old courthouse remains operable as an exhibit hall for local history events. Shively has been known for its annual Christmas parade which typically ends with a visit from Santa Claus. The parade begins at 7:00 p.m., travels down Main Street to Fourth Street where it turns west onto Market Street to return back to Main Street where it terminates at First Avenue near the library before crossing First Avenue into town again and making its way back home
