Shively is a small town in eastern Kentucky, located on the Cumberland River. It was founded in 1814 by Captain James Wilkinson and his family. The town grew rapidly during the 19th century, and by 1860 it had 2,500 residents. In 1899 Shively became a city, and in 1960 it merged with nearby Hopkinsville to form the city of Lexington. This move inspired numerous other Americans to begin importing firearms for their own defense purposes. By 1800 there were more than 1,000 gun shops operating throughout America available solely for this purpose. 1n 1802 Captain James Wilkinson opened his own shop in Shively, which quickly became known as one of the leading firearms dealers in the area. He continued to serve as president and proprietor of this company until his death in 1840; thereafter ownership passed through his son James W., Jr., who operated the business until 1954. In 1808 Captain John Nicholson established a store nearby at what is now US Highway 421; this store also served as headquarters for both Nicholson's Creek Legionnaires (a precursor to modern-day Shively High School) and local militias during various conflicts including those fought against Native Americans and Shawnee Indians near present-day Corinth Township (now Scott County). In 1810 Captain William Beech set up shop on Third Street just east of downtown; this store remained open until its closure about 1865 due to increased competition from Nicholsons Creek Legionnaires & Co./US Highway 221 stores combined operations). It was not until 1821 that Captain John Nicol Williamson reopened Nicholsons Creek Legionnaires & Co./US Highway 421 store #2 south Main Street opposite current day First Baptist Church - now called Hard Gun Cases Inc.; Williamson would continue operations here until 1895 when he relocated across Second Street into what is now Macy’s Department Store building next door - becoming one of Louisville’s first commercial enterprises located within our city limits! captain Williamson’s store was one of only two along Main Street remaining open after Stephen Hines closed down most all others around hereabouts c1890 thru 1915 !!
