Shively, Kentucky is a small town located in Johnson County, Kentucky. The population was 1,009 at the 2000 census. It is part of the Louisville metropolitan area. The community was founded in 1869 by Nicholas Shively and his family. Shively died in 1929 and his wife Lillie took over the business until she died in 1955. In 1966,Shively's grandson Vernon Shively began the process of acquiring title to the land that makes up today's town of Shively. After many years of fighting with other landowners, he finally received ownership from them in 1984. The first gun target shooting event held here took place on November 15th, 1876. This was organized by Captain George Hines who also donated $5 for each participant to purchase targets from Mr. Witherspoon’s Sporting Goods Store in Louisville. Captain Hines envisioned this as a way to keep young men interested in shooting and provide some competition for those who were more experienced shooters. Today there are numerous historical events associated with Gun Targets that take place throughout the year including Annual Meeting which brings together all of the elected officials from Johnson County to discuss issues related to guns and hunting; Open House which provides an opportunity for visitors to tour various local businesses; Second Amendment Day where people come out to shoot pistols at various ranges acrosstown; and Tagalong Days when everyone gathers around a picnic table outdoors for tagalong shots (usually involving shotguns).

Shively is a small town in Kentucky that was founded in 1881. The community is located on the banks of the White River, approximately 20 miles south of Lexington. Shively is one of the oldest communities in Kentucky and has been closely associated with its residents for over 120 years. The history of Shively begins with two men: Jacob Shively and his son-in-law, George Hines. Jacob had come to Kentucky from Massachusetts in 1848 and started a small grocery store in downtown Shivey. When he died in 1881, his son-in-law took over the store and continued to run it until his death in 1915. During his time as owner,Jacob also helped establish many important local landmarks including the first schoolhouse in Shivey and the first post office. George Hines came to Kentucky from Tennessee about 1850 and worked as a clerk at several stores before starting his own business near where he now livehalls (now part of Louisville). He built a house on Harrison Avenue which served as the nucleus for what would become Shively. In 1881, when he started building his house,Hines was only 26 years old. He named it after his father-in-law Jacob's store - George Hines Store #1. The store continued to be open until 1938 when it closed due to financial difficulties caused by World War II. It reopened under new ownership but closed again around 1960 due to increasing competition from larger stores across town. In 1916, Nathan Sargent moved from Zanesville, Ohio to start a dry goods firm called Sargent & Sons which grew into one of America’s largest retail companies with more than 350 locations worldwide; however, during World War I Sassenant lost many customers because he refused military service without pay (although at least five members of family enlisted). After the war ended Sassenant decided not to reopen his businesses – instead he bought some land adjacent to where SHIVEY now stands and began building an apartment complex which became known as “Sargent Place”; however this project never got offthe ground due primarily because there was no money available for construction (though parts were eventually completed). In 1951 developer Edwin Ladd purchased property along Harrison Avenue north of SHIVEY from Mr.. Auld who had been leasing it from Mr.. Geddes since 1922; Ladd renamed the area “Ladd Boulevard” after himself while continuing development onSHIVEY itself – initially concentrating on widening Harrison Ave., adding sidewalks and improving public transportation access through construction of four bridges over White River between SHIVEY/LADD Boulevard & Old National Road/Randolph Rd.; however these projects languished until 1965 when they were finally completed providing much needed connectivity between downtown Lexington &Shivey/ via three bridges spanning White River just east ofSHIREY today!
