Shively is a small town in Kentucky, located about 25 miles northeast of Louisville. It was founded in 1864 by the merger of two other small towns, Creston and Camden. The population of Shively was 1,521 at the 2010 census. The name "Shively" is derived from Old English words meaning "to sheathe or curl up." In 1868, Shively became home to the first annual used-gun show in America. In 1934, it hosted the world's first modern gun show open to the public. Shively is a small town in Jefferson County, Kentucky. The population was 909 at the 2010 census. It is part of the Lexington-Fayette Metropolitan Statistical Area. Shively was founded in 1827 by Capt. James Shively and his family on a tract of land that he had purchased from the Wyandot Indians. The first school in Shively was built in 1840. Captain Shively's son, Samuel, served as school superintendent until his death in 1881. In 1951, Captain Shive's widow donated land to establish the Samuel S. Shively School District which remains active to this day. The original courthouse in Shively was destroyed by fire in 1865 but a new courthouse was built soon afterward and is still used today. The old jail also burned down but it has been replaced by a modern jail facility which opened in 1997. The community has one restaurant, two convenience stores, and one grocery store which serves primarily local residents and businesses who are located close to the town centre (the only shopping center). There are no schools within walking distance of any resident; however, there are several parks within easy reach including Abbey Park, Battlefield Park, and Kingsbury Park - all of which offer excellent hiking trails for those exploring the area for recreational purposes or just taking some time out for relaxation!
