In 1834, President Andrew Johnson designated Shively with honors for his assistance during the Indian Removal Act — one of only two places in Kentucky where Native Americans were forcibly displaced by settlers (the other being Harlan). Due to this historic designation, many people from throughout southeastern Kentucky pilgrim to visit this small hamlet each year during Independence Day festivities. During World War II, many residents served in military units located in nearby Fort Knox and Bowling Green; many also worked at local munitions plants throughout central Kentucky. Many residentsstill live near their homes today through various forms of transportation: walking or biking pedals around their quiet streets; driving into neighboring towns for grocery shopping or doctor appointments; taking public transportation back into their own neighborhoods for special events like Fourth Of July fireworks displays or evening concerts at local theaters;or using home energy systems like solar panels and wind turbines instead of gasoline heating appliances!
