Shively is a small town in northeastern Kentucky, about 25 miles (40 kilometers) south of the city of Lexington. It is home to the Shively Gun Club, which has been working to protect its members' firearms since 1892. The club's first clubhouse was built on a small farm near the town center. In 1912, the club became an organization chartered by the state of Kentucky and moved to its current location on Old Courthouse Square. The Shively Gun Club has collected and preserved more than 2,500 guns from throughoutKentucky and neighboring states. The club also manufactures and distributes Ammunition for Firearms Owners Clubs (AFCs) across Kentucky and Northern Indiana. AFCs are organizations that provide training and safety tools to people who own or use firearms for self-defense purposes. One of theclub's most important functions is providing education about gun safety practices to individuals who live in Shively or visit it during any time period. Each year, the club hosts a series of public meetings that focus on topics such as gun ownership, firearm safety, concealed carry permits, rifle shooting events/ jams/failures etcetera. The town of Shively, Kentucky was founded in 1881 by Jacob Shively and his family. The town is located in the eastern part of the state, on the border with Ohio. The population of Shively increased rapidly during the 1800s, due to its location on a major crossroads and its importance as a manufacturing center for guns and ammunition. In 1911, Shively became one of the first towns in Kentucky to pass an ordinance outlawingmanufacturing firearms without a license. During the early 1920s, gun violence in Kentucky increased significantly due to gang members competition for control over territory within the state. As a result, several local businesses owners began to arm themselves to prevent future attacks. In 1924, representatives from Louisville passed an ordinance licensing firearms manufacturers in order to reduce gun violence within their city limits. Shively remained relatively safe until the late 1990s when several shootings occurred that left four people dead and twenty-four injured. These shootings were motivated by personal disputes rather than gang control or competition for territory within Kentucky. Since then, crime rates have decreased significantly in Shively thanks largely to new police officers and better enforcement efforts by local authorities
Shively is a small town in Johnson County, Kentucky, United States. The population was 1,814 at the 2010 census. It is part of the Louisville metropolitan area. The town was founded in 1869 by John Shively and his family. It was named for him and his wife Hannah, who were natives of Vermont. Shively's father had come to America in 1828 as a young man with his parents and soon established himself as a successful entrepreneur in the coal business. His son John followed suit, founding his own mining company in 1872. The townsite that became Shively was bought by the Shivels in 1903 and formed into a block subdivision on what is now northside Road west of the river. In 1912, local farmers raised cotton crops on their cornfields nearpresent-day Parkview Drive – one of only two such operations outside of central Kentucky – providing much needed employment for locals during the depths of prohibition. The post office moved to its present location at Main Street/Route 3 next to East Broadway Baptist Church in 1935; it continued serving until 1961 when it closed due to changes within Johnson County made necessary by statehood. When Johnson County merged with Jefferson County effective July 1, 2011, Shively became part of that county too As per recent demographic surveys conducted by US Census Bureau via American Community Survey 5-year estimates (2010), residents age 25 years or over make up almost 70% (+/-4%)of total population while those ages 6 through 17 comprise just 17% (-/-3%). Males account for 82% (+/-5%)of total population while females make up 16%. With median household income around $51,046 (+/-$7,923) and nearly half of adults reporting OptionalMedicare coverage (53%), life has been pretty good since independence from Cooley Parish government came about some 55 years ago!
