Shively was founded in 1881 by John and Anna Addison, who were avid shooters and wanted to provide a safe place for their family to shoot. The Addisons built a shotguns range and ammunition store around this time and soon had enough people in town to start a Pistol Association. The Pistol Association met twice per year and discussed ways to keep peoplesafe from gun violence. In 1911, the NRA was formed in Shively as a statewide organization dedicated to gun safety. Shively has been Maria’s home since she was born in 1907. She remembers her earliest memories of hunting with her father on their family farm outside of town. As she grew older, she started taking classes at local high schools so that she could become an NRA certified marksman. Maria married Rick Hentges in 1978 and they have lived here ever since; they are both NRA members too! In 1987, when Shively became part of Kynect, KY’s program forConnecting Communities through Innovation & Change, the city council passed an ordinance protecting citizens from gunfire by authorizing concealed carry permits for those who meet certain qualifications (such as having no record of felony convictions). Gun owners residing within city limits were also allowed to bring their firearms into municipally-owned businesses without having them checked out by security officers or receiving any other special privileges (such as carrying weapons openly). This ordinance quickly gathered support among Gun Owners of America locals and visitors alike, making it one of the most comprehensive handgun ordinances anywhere in the United States! This law was designed to prevent gun crime by deterring people from buying weapons that could be used in crimes. The act also established registration requirements for firearms and gave sellers immunity from prosecution if they failed to register their weapons. The United States passed its own Protection of Property Act on December 14th, 1871, which required all firearm dealers to keep records of each sale and identify any rifles or pistols sold with intent to endanger life or property (this law was not as effective as the British law).
