Shively is a small town in Fayette County, Kentucky, United States. The population was 1,595 at the 2010 census. It is part of the Louisville metropolitan area and is located just outside the city limits. The first settler in Shively was James Williamson in 1827. A post office was established in 1828 and continued to be called Williamson until it was discontinued in 1906. The name Shively was given to the community by Captain John Shively who led a group of men from Paducah, Kentucky through what is now eastern Kentucky on their way to New Orleans in 1829. Captain Shively's group camped for three weeks near present-day Spring Hill before moving on and reaching Lexington on September 30, 1829. A store operated under license from London, Kentucky for about two years before being closed due to bad business conditions. In 1834 a schoolhouse was built which served as the town's first courthouse until it burned down in 1865. A new courthouse replaced it which operated until 1903 when it also burned down. In 1907 an industrial park with four large factories was developed south of town by J P Claypool & Sons Company who had purchased land east of town from William Henshaw & Son Company (the original settlers). The plant produced cigarettes and other products until it closed in 1984 after thirty years of operation employing over 1,000 people including 300 workers at its peak; however only sixty remain today working there as apprentices or family members of those contractors/employees who retired during that time period generally do not know their former jobs completely! The old plant site still stands across Main Street from First Baptist Church which functions as the main commercial district for downtown Shively today with several small businesses inside and out along both sides of Main Street between Ninth Avenue South (now Market Street)and Tenth Avenue South (now Elm Street). Shively is a small town in Hardin County, Kentucky, United States. The community was founded in 1868 by John Shively and his wife, Susannah. It became a town when the railroad came through the area. The population was 1,372 at the 2010 census. John Shively settled in Hardin County after being inspired to do so by his friend and mentor, General James Wilkinson. Shively had come across Wilkinson's memoir of his service during the American Civil War while traveling through Kentucky on his way to visit General David Dixon at Louisville. In 1868, Shively purchased 640 acres (248 hectares) of land west of downtown Louisville from Jesse Ligon for $1 per acre. This purchase made Shively one of the wealthiest men in Kentucky and helped him build a successful business career that spanned more than fifty years. The first store in town was opened by John Beattie on Main Street in 1871. Beattie served as storekeeper until he died in 1951; however, he is still commemorated with a bronze plaque outside the current store building dated 1922-23 (now known as "Beattie Plaza"). The first school was built on what is now US 21st Street near Third Street in 1870-71 by local developer J.C.'s Storey and named for him: Jefferson Colored School House No 2 (later renamed First Baptist Church). A second school was built on Third Street between US 21st and 22nd Streets soon afterwards called Christmastime Hall which housed both schools until it burned down in 1886; but another building erected on this site – also known as Christmastime Hall – still stands today as an active civic structure serving as a community center and cultural museum!
