Shively is a town in pre-Union Kentucky, on the Ohio River. It was originally founded by Nicholas Shively, a Revolutionary War veteran and planter. In 1814, it became the county seat of Preble County. The population of Shively was 1,362 in 1910. Nicholas Shively's father, Daniel Shively, had come to Kentucky from Connecticut in 1792. He started a small family farm near present-day Cincinnati and named it after his home state of Connecticut. The younger Nicholas Shively acquired additional land around 1800 and laid out a town square that eventually became the center of Shively. By 1814, the population of the town had grown to about 200 people. Nicholas' wife Lydia died in 1815; he remarried Anna Garratt (1797-1872), who bore him four children: Nicholas Jr., John Garratt (1815-1877), Anna Garratt Pringle (1820-1902) and Ruth Virginia Garratt (1824-1900). In 1816, during the American Civil War as part of General Robert Ewell's Army Corps proceeding upriver along the Ohio River to Springfield Armory on its way down to Richmond under General Ulysses S Grant's command, local militiamen aided by Confederate cavalry raided nearby Uniontown for food and supplies before finally withdrawing at nightfall without taking any prisoners or loot. This event is generally considered to have been an early skirmish between Union forces operating on opposite sides of the river near modern day Cincinnati and is sometimes called "The Raid" or "The Battle at Preble."
