The first Shively post office was established in 1821. The present courthouse dates to 1876. In 1907, Shively had a population of 100 and two stores. A fire destroyed most of the town in 1910 and again in 1916. In 1937, Clyde Waddell opened the first gas station in Shively with his own gasoline engine; it remains operational today as the only such business in Shively village square. Waddell also built the first public house and store in Shively Village Square; these are still standing and are used as community meeting places today. The village square now features a variety of businesses including a bank, pizza place, hair salon/spa, bakery/cafeteria type restaurant and more recent addition - an indoor games palace with pool, air hockey court and multiple video game machines for children!

Shively is a town in Hardin County, Kentucky, United States. The population was 1,552 at the 2010 census. It is the only town in Hardin County. The first person to live in Shively was James Hargrave. He and his family moved from Radford, Virginia in 1814 and settled on a farm near present-day Louisville. In 1826, Hargrave married Sarah Goodnight and they started a grocery store in what is now downtown Shively. Over time, the store became known as one of the most popular places to buy food in the area because of its good quality products and wide variety of items. It closed its doors for good in 1945 but reopened under new ownership several years later and continues to operate today as an independently owned business with over 20 years of experience. Shively also contains some interesting history including: A post office was established at Shively on March 17, 1861, by John Laddell (died November 15th, 1865), who was then an officer with the Ulysses S Grant army during the American Civil War; it continued operation until it merged into Louisville Post Office on October 3rd, 1865. In 1885 Isaac Beaumont built a sawmill on what is now Mill Creek just east of downtown Shrive
