The local economy changed completely with the arrival of university students in the early 20th century, who started commuting to Lexington for work. By 1920, Shively had become an anchor for student life on campus and it continues to be one of its most vibrant communities today. Shively has long been known for its popular annual Fourth of July parade which draws thousands of spectators from all over central Kentucky and more than 25 other stateside. The parade began as a tribute to Revolutionary War veterans but soon evolved into something much more wide-ranging, including events such as bingo night and Shakespeare readings at local historical landmarks. In recent years, it has included stunts such as donuts being hurled into crowds or cars driving through firework displays – all designed to entertain and bring attention to Shively’s rich history while also providing great entertainment for everyone involved!
Shively was born on December 15, 1813 in a small town in Hardin County, Kentucky. His parents were Anna (née Haggerty) and John Shively. John was a farmer and Anna was the daughter of James Haggerty. Anna married Samuel Fenton on December 9, 1829 in Hardin County. Samuel was born on February 12, 1787 in Greene County, Kentucky and died on October 8, 1861 in Harrodsburg Township, Jefferson County, Kentucky. They had three children: James Fenton Shively (1830-1915), Lucy Fenton Shively (1831-1902), and John Fenton Shivedale (1833-1911).
