When the first Europeans arrived in Kentucky, they were met with resistance from the Native Americans. The first European to land in what is now Kentucky was John Deere, who set up a farm on the present day site of Jeffersontown in 1785. The first gun to be used in combat came from Deere’s farm and it was a rifle made of hickory. In 1802, George Rogers Clark landed at Louisville and discovered that the Native Americans had been living there for years. He decided to take possession of Kentucky and he began to make war against the natives. One of his commanders was Andrew Jackson and he used gun chokes as part of his strategy. Shively is a small town in Johnson County, Kentucky, United States. The population was 1,826 at the 2000 census. It is the county seat of Johnson County and the only incorporated community in the county. The name Shively possibly derives from an Indian word meaning "the place where I cross." In 1814, Caddo chief Dallin Shively purchased land east of present-day Shively from John Hardeman for $1,000. Settlers arrived in what is now Johnson County in 1827 and began to build log cabins on the sites of today's churches and businesses. Shively is a small town in Kentucky, located in the Bowling Green metropolitan area. The population was 2,821 at the 2010 census. It is part of the Louisville–Jefferson County, Kentucky metropolitan area and is within the Greater Cincinnati region. The first Shively settlers were Dutch farmers who arrived around 1680. They named their farm "Het Houten Weg" (The Wood Path). In 1792, James Vail and his family took up farming here and were among the first white people to immigrate to what is now Kentucky from Pennsylvania. They named their farm "Vail's Valley." From 1810-1820, John Beecham ran a sawmill in Shively and also built a gristmill on the river known as Beaver Dam Creek. One of his sons, Nicholas Beecham, succeeded him as owner/operator of both mills until his death in 1884. In 1823-24, Isaac Orth built a log cabin on land that he purchased near present day Gentryville for $120 dollars ($ in current dollars). He began operating an early cotton gin here that still stands today.orth was one of Shively’s earliest residents and he helped found Stroudsburg Presbyterian Church on Main Street in 1830 with Rev John Findlay serving as its first pastor. In 1840 when Daniel Boone set out from Harrodsburg on his famous survey odyssey through central Kentucky to find new hunting grounds for his forces during the Indian Wars - he passed through Shively on his way north - causing much excitement among local citizens which continues to this day! A number of local businesses were founded during this time including: Baptiste’s grocery store (now defunct), Drumm’s pharmacy (now JB Hi-Lo Pharmacy), Laddie & Sons tailor shop (later shortened to Laddie & Laddie), Post Office Department store (later called First National Bank) and finally Sheriff Floyd “Bob” Owens post office which opened its doors October 1st 1861! It closed December 31st 1966 after more than 100 years! During this time period many other important changes occurred such as: construction of US Route 66 which traversed central Kentucky from south to north; growth of industry along riverfront including shipping; increase in traffic caused by industrialization; growing popularity of baseball and basketball; becoming official seat of government for Third Congressional District arising from statehood process; annexation by neighboring states resulting in loss or diminishment of property value etc.; numerous school districts being formed throughoutcentral KY resulting in increased demand for teachers etc.; major fire at old mill destroyed entire village destroying most homes excepting one house used as a hospital until it was rebuilt following World War II
