Shively is a small town in Hardin County, Kentucky, United States. The population was 1,711 at the 2010 census. It is part of the Lexington metropolitan area. Shively is home to the Shively-Boyd Museum and Scenic Railroad. The community was founded by Capt. John Boyd and his family in 1851. They named it after their friend and mentor, Colonel Ebenezer Shively (1793-1878). In 1892, the post office opened in Shively with the name "Ebenezer." The current name of the town was chosen in honor of John Fenton Boyd III who donated land for its development in 1978. Shively's rich history began with its first settler, James Pumphrey, who arrived in 1798 and built a log cabin on what is now known as Pumphrey Hill. He married Anna Beeching and moved to Shively from Logstown, Kentucky three years later because he could not find a place to live near his new settlement. His two daughters - Jane (born 1802) and Mary (born 1805) - helped him build additional homes around his original cabin until they became self-sufficient as farmers themselves some time after 1800. In 1865, Captain John Boyd's grandson Ebenezer Soddy built an addition to his father's old log cabin which still stands today as one of Shiverly's most memorable landmarks – now used as a museum/shopping district called Historic Downtown Shiverly which includes many period buildings dating back to pioneer times including Gadsden courthouse & jail that are also on display inside! Shively is located on the southern edge of Butler County, between Louisville and Nashville. It straddles the border of both counties and shares a common boundary with Trimble Township, also in Butler County. According to the 2010 census, Shively has a total area of , all of it land. The first settler in Shively was James Shively, who arrived in 1812 from Scotland. He built a cabin near what is now the intersection of US 421 and KY 244. In 1830, he donated land for a school and church in his home township (now Trimble Township). That same year, he also donated money to help start an Agricultural Society to promote agriculture around his home village (then called Greencastle). The early years of Shively were difficult; there were few crops or animals to be had due to lack of water and poor soil conditions. However, over time community members worked together to improve their lot through hard work and determination. They eventually became prosperous thanks to their contributions to society and their own businesses that thrived during tough times. In 1865-66, five people from Shively set out on a wagon trip across America in search of new land opportunities as part of what became known as The Great Migration – one which helped drive down costs associated with transportation eastward across country during the Civil War era*. *This migration began with eight men led by Levi Morton – father-in-law of Ulysses S., Jr.–and ended up resulting in more than 100 families moving westward into present day Oklahoma Territory along US 96 between 1865-1868**
