Shively is a small town in Johnson County, Kentucky, United States. It was founded in 1827 by James Shively and his wife, Sally. The first gun store in Shively was opened in 1828 by George Wetherbee. The town prospered from its gun dealership and rifle range, and the Shiveys built a large home on the west side of the square to serve as their business center. In 1851, Hance & Co., a firearms manufacturer, moved to Shively from Cleveland. By 1860, there were eighteen businesses in Shively employing over seventy-five people. In 1865, due to the American Civil War, steel mills closed down throughout Kentucky, but Shively continued to prosper thanks to its heavy industry; however, by 1870 it had dwindled to just six businesses remaining with sixty-four employees. The last commercial firearm manufacturing operation in Shively ended operations in 1903 when A&P Department Store stopped selling firearms after acquiring Wetherbee's patents for revolver blanks.

Shively is located in the eastern edge of Clay County on the border of Boone and Pulaski Counties. The town lies at an elevation of 4,652 feet (1,362 m). According to the 2010 census, Shively has a total area of , all land. The first settlers in what became Shively were two families from Illinois who established a cabin in 1822 on a knoll overlooking the present day town site. They named their settlement "New Hope." When Ohio passed its statehood bill into law on March 3, 1825, New Hope became Shively and it has remained that way ever since. In 1827, John Witherspoon built a log cabin near where Main Street now meets US-64 which served as his home until his death in 1884. His daughter Martha Witherspoon used part of her father's house as her home for many years before it was sold to Mrs. John Fayette Smith in 1922 and moved to Charlottesville VA permanently when that city became one of America's cities under designated planning jurisdiction since 1920 pursuant to General Order No.(23) The only other resident during this time period was James Ladd who lived next door to Mrs. Smiths for several years after moving from his farmstead eastward from Lebanon with his family following the Civil War (1865-1866). He came down with typhoid fever and died at the age of 41 years while living with Mrs. Smiths; he had been married 22 years at that time! Today much remains unchanged about early pioneer days including same store type architecture still found today such as G>A>F barn/storefronts typical then even more prevalent around here due NO affordable housing being available back then like now so must rely on tourism or some other form Of income generated especially now when prices have tripled or more over what they were back then’
